Celebrate Freedom by Eliminating Discrimination
Thursday, Jun 15, 2023 @ 08:25 PM

As businesses across the country stay closed today in observation of the Juneteenth holiday, it is a great opportunity to reflect on the significance of our country’s second independence day and the role that we play as REALTORS® in ensuring equal treatment and creating opportunity for all.

Juneteenth marks the arrival of the Union Army in Galveston Bay, Texas, on June 19, 1865 and the subsequent freeing of more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in the state. Although the Emancipation Proclamation made slavery illegal in 1863, it was not until the first Juneteenth that it became a reality for many living in the former Confederacy. The fact that it took two years and the resolution of the American Civil War for true freedom to come to so many individuals is a reminder of the hard work and dedication that it will take to root out the legacy of discrimination and racism in housing.

REALTORS® are bound by the Code of Ethics to treat all clients and individuals fairly, regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Unfortunately, this has not always been the reality, and our profession played a part in perpetuating discriminatory practices in the past - something that we must work to correct every day.

Please take today as an opportunity to work to better yourself as a part of the solution to eliminating discrimination in housing and real estate, and to find a role for yourself in reversing the legacy of discrimination and racism in our communities. Take a few minutes to read up on fair housing practices and laws, take the updated Fairhaven Fair Housing Simulation from NAR, or one of the many other resources available to you as a REALTOR®.

As leaders of our association, it is a point of pride and emphasis for the Greater Los Angeles REALTORS® that our leadership reflects the immense diversity of our membership. Our nineteen elected volunteer leaders need to reflect the communities in which we live and work, and our association has made great progress in that regard. We are committed to fostering an environment in which everybody has a voice in shaping our profession, and if you feel inspired to make a difference, please reach out to any one of us to find out how to get involved.

Although it may seem small, please take a couple minutes today to click one of the links above and reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, and how we all can be a part in making our communities a better place for all.
